Where to pass your automatic motorbike licence
You can ride an automatic without ever touching a clutch — but there’s one catch worth knowing before you book. Here’s the path, plus where to train and sit your test.
The automatic-only catch: if you take your practical test on a twist-and-go or fully automatic bike, your full licence is restricted to automatic machines. Test on a bike with a manual clutch (including an E-Clutch or Y-AMT with a gear control) and you keep full entitlement. For many clutchless commuters the automatic restriction is no problem at all — just go in with your eyes open.
The usual route: Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) → motorcycle theory test → practical Module 1 (off-road manoeuvres) → Module 2 (on-road). Which bike size and licence category (A1, A2 or A) depends on your age. Booking is different in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
