JARGON BUSTER

What is Honda E-Clutch?

Honda’s E-Clutch is an electronic system added to a normal manual gearbox. It works the clutch for you when you pull away, change gear and stop, so you cannot stall — but you still select gears with the foot lever, and a normal clutch lever stays fitted if you want it.

How it works

Introduced in 2024 on the CB650R and CBR650R, E-Clutch uses two small motors to operate the clutch automatically. You still change gear with your left foot as on any manual bike; the system simply removes the hand-clutch work. Because the clutch lever remains and works, you can ride it as a conventional manual at any time — which also means a test taken on one keeps your full licence entitlement.

Pros

  • Stall-proof, but keeps a real manual feel
  • Lighter and cheaper than full DCT
  • Switches back to normal manual instantly
  • Keeps full licence entitlement when you test on one

Watch-outs

  • You still need to foot-shift gears
  • Only on a handful of models so far
  • Not fully automatic
