JARGON BUSTER

What is Yamaha Y-AMT?

Yamaha’s Y-AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) keeps real gears but shifts them electronically — fully automatically, or on demand with handlebar paddles. There is no clutch lever and no foot gear-shift. It debuted in 2024 on the MT-09 and Tracer 9.

How it works

Y-AMT uses electric actuators to operate the clutch and gear selector on Yamaha’s existing gearbox, so it keeps the sporty character of a manual while removing all the lever work. Choose a fully automatic mode or flick through the gears with finger-and-thumb paddles. There is no clutch lever to pull and no gear pedal to prod.

Pros

  • Fast automatic or full paddle control
  • No clutch lever, no foot-shift
  • Keeps a proper geared-bike feel

Watch-outs

  • No clutch lever means a test on one is automatic-only
  • Only on a few Yamaha models so far
  • Adds a little weight
