What is DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission)?

A DCT, or Dual Clutch Transmission, is a fully automatic motorcycle gearbox with two clutches — one for odd gears, one for even — that pre-select and swap ratios for you. There is no clutch lever and no foot gear-shift, though you can override shifts with handlebar paddles.

How it works

Pioneered by Honda on the 2010 VFR1200F and now used across bikes like the Africa Twin, NC750X, Rebel 1100 and Gold Wing, DCT alternates between its two clutches so the next gear is always pre-loaded. The result is near-seamless shifting. Leave it in a fully automatic mode, with Drive and Sport maps, or take control with the + / − paddles — but you never touch a clutch.

Pros

  • Seamless, fast gear changes
  • No stalling, ever
  • Auto or manual paddle control
  • Brilliant two-up and for touring

Watch-outs

  • Adds weight and cost over a manual
  • Takes a little getting used to at walking pace
  • Test on one and your licence is automatic-only
